Western Pomerania as a region for the construction of a nuclear power plant

Zachodniopomorskie province is perfectly prepared for the construction of a nuclear power plant.

Designated sites in Gryfino, Sławno, Stargard and Goleniów districts meet the requirements stipulated by the International Atomic Energy Agency and are not second to any other site in the world. The assets of the province, such as tectonic stability of the ground, low population density, convenient transport connections and the proximity of water bodies, made it possible to submit to the Government of the Republic of Poland proposals for a greater number of sites. After long discussions, the Provincial Board for the Energy Security reduced the number of locations to 10 sites in 4 area variants.

In Dolna Odra region, it will be possible to benefit from the coal/nuclear synergy thanks to the cooperation between the existing coal-fired power plant PGE Zespół Elektrowni Dolna Odra S.A. and a nuclear power plant. It is possible to evacuate power from both facilities thanks to the highest voltage networks. Pniewo and Pniewo-Krajnik have a clear ownership situation - the adjacent plots at the distance of several hundreds metres from the Oder River are owned by PGE and the Treasury. Dębogóra and Krzymów sites are plots at the distance of 200-500 m from the Oder River. They are owned by the Treasury and Lasy Państwowe [State Forests National Forest Holding]. All sites are situated 40-50 km from a harbour in Szczecin. Szczecin-Zielona Góra railway line is also an important asset.

Kopań in Darłowo commune is a 183 ha site included in the governmental documents related to a nuclear programme in the 1980s. An unrestricted access to fresh water (0.5 km from Kopań Lake) and salt water (3 km from the Baltic Sea shoreline) is an advantage of Kopań site. Two railway lines run over the commune. Nearby, there is the highest voltage transmission network necessary for evacuation of power from the power plant.

The Stargard district site has an excellent manoeuvring space for the construction of a power plant. The area of Krzywiec site is 1403 ha; the area of Lisowo: 2259 ha; the area of Wiechowo site: 1376 ha. Krzywiec is located near Dzwonowskie ponds and Krąpiel River; therefore, there is an access to cooling water. Lisowo is situated near Marianowo Lake, Lutkowo ponds and Krępa River. Wiechowo is situated near Szadzko Lake, Wiechowo Lake, Marianowo Lake, Krępa River and Pęzinka River. The so-called Berlin motorway is a basis for the development of road infrastructure. In the vicinity, there is a railway line and an airport.

In Stepnica region, there is an access to water as Szczecin Lagoon is located nearby. Approximately 1 km from the proposed plots, there is a cargo handling seaport. The seaport will be modernised in 2011 in order to increase the draught to 3.80 m and to adapt one berth for large loads. In the vicinity, there is the provincial road No. 112 and national road S-3, an international airport in Goleniowo and a railway station with loading ramps.

I am glad that Zachodniopomorskie province inhabitants give their approval for the development of nuclear energy. The construction of a power plant will make the province attractive to investors and will contribute to scientific development and economic growth of the region.
