Mister Waldemar Pawlak
Deputy prime Minister and Minister of Economy

Dear Mister Prime Minister,

With reference to the broad discussion on industrial application in Poland of a method of underground coal gasification in deposit as modern technology of use of our domestic natural resources, I submit to you a study titled "Opportunities and Hazards of Underground Coal Gasification in Deposit". The study was prepared by an interdisciplinary team of specialists related to the Mining Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

I would like to point out that the existing global experience with underground coal gasification in deposit produces a conclusion that potential application of the method to polish coal deposits will only generate gas for a small local power plant or power and heat plant with power up to 200 MW.

Underground gasification is probably a future alternative to conventional mining methods in the context of expanding the economic resources by making use of potentially economic resources.

Without semi-industrial experience with the application of the method for various deposits differing with respect to geology, mining and environment - only on the basis of opinions from literature, it is impossible to formulate a conclusion that Poland holds today an alternative to the currently applied conventional coal mining methods, i.e. strip and underground mining.
Therefore, I am of the opinion that in order to ascertain the potential of using in Poland the technology of underground coal gasification in deposit it is necessary to perform comprehensive studies of the technology on semi-industrial scale on selected hard coal and brown coal deposits in Poland.

On my own behalf and on behalf of the entire scientific environment, I declare full support to performing the study and tests in this sphere.

Sincerely yours,

Prof. Antoni Tajdus
