Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów i Kanalizacji Sp. z o.o. (Municipal Water Supply and Sewage Company, MWSSC) in Rybnik is a winner of the Polish Quality Award contest

Better management - greater innovativeness

Janusz Karwot, President of the MWSSC in Rybnik:

"By participating in the Polish Quality Award contest we wanted to confirm the correctness of our activities by an independent audit. As it turned out, we are going in the right direction. We have met all the criteria of the contest. I am happy that, along with the owner of our company, i.e. the city of Rybnik, we became a winner of this award." n

For some time the Municipal Water Supply and Sewage Company in Rybnik has been initiating activities aimed at better management of the company. In recent years, the company obtained first the PN-EN ISO 9001:2000 certificate, and then the PN-EN ISO 14001 and PN-N-18001 certificates.

Currently the company meets all the EU directives with respect to ecology and management. "The Management Board also decided to work with a task budget, which means management by financing individual tasks. One of our most important projects, on which we have worked with the Silesia University of Technology, has been the development of a system to monitor the water pipe line and to support the management of the usage of property in our company. The program has taken 2 years and currently it is about to be completed," said Janusz Karwot, the President of the MWSSC.

This project has resulted in a significant increase of innovativeness in the company and in its pipeline management. The performance of the program allowed the company to detect unusual situations in the water pipeline, e.g. potential breakdowns or instances of water theft. The monitoring system provides data to the pipeline operator. The project has also aided the company in better planning of repairs and upgrades of the pipelines. In the cooperation with the Silesia University of Technology, which is a research and development entity, the University used its extensive knowledge while the company brought in its practical expertise.

In the President's opinion, partnership with the Silesia University of Technology has resulted in the growth of the most precious asset, the "intellectual capital", of the company's employees. The cooperation of the MWSSC with the University has also resulted in measurable outcomes. One of those outcomes is the reduction of losses. In 2004, the losses amounted to 21.18%, in 2006 they went down to 18.03%, and now the number is 17%.

The project performed by the MWSSC has been financed by a grant of the Sector Operating Program "Increase of Competitiveness of Companies", which constitutes a part of cooperation between research and development organizations and commercial entities. The European Union has covered a part of the cost in the amount of 326 thousand zlotys.

In the coming years, the company is planning not only to replace the pipelines but has also developed a concept to modernize its sewage treatment plant. To complete the latter project, the MWSSC is also planning to obtain EU funds from existing programs. n
